Details

Description

Fortescue undertook a review of Solomon’s forecasted water balance and identified the requirement to reequip and abstract water from the existing stockyards borefield. This borefield, along with future borefields in the lower Fortescue area would be used to supply up to 250 L/s of water for use throughout the Solomon site.

The existing Solomon Drive Turkeys Nest will be used to store the bore water before being transferred by a new High Pressure (HP) pump station up to the existing Raw Water Break Tank. This transfer will be achieved through a newly installed DN630 HP HDPE pipeline. In addition to this, water will also be gravity fed down to the existing 17M Dam Raw Water Storage Facility (RWSF) via a newly installed DN630 HDPE supplementary gravity main.

TCD’s key deliverables included:

  • Upgrade of stockyards Turkey’s Nest with new electrical pumps and associated steel piping.
  • Cleaning and rectification of existing Turkey’s Nest.
  • Installation of new high-pressure pipes through the pond wall.
  • Installation of new electrical pumps.
  • Installation of new steel pump station, with associated valving.

Details

Description

TCD were engaged by Q H & M Birt for the installation of a corrugated steel tunnel to support a new heavy vehicle hail road creek crossing as part of the Eastern Leases mine expansion works on Groote Eylandt, in the Northern Territory, for the Principal GEMCO / South32.

The tunnel was a 71m long, 16m wide and 5.5m high structure with a second layer of external ribs required to give it additional strength.

The tunnel consisted of over 1,000no. individual plate segments weighing up to 300kgs each and held together with approximately 20,000 bolts.

The assembly had to follow the stringent manufacturers recommendations in terms of both sequencing and bolt torque requirements to ensure both stability during construction and that it meets its design load requirements.

Construction was carried out at the start of the Northern Territory wet season in extremely hot, humid conditions punctuated by frequent storm events which would result in the creek flowing and restricted access for our cranes and EWP’s.
