As part of Fortescue’s commitment to decarbonise its operations, new renewable green power electricity will be transmitted between sites using a dedicated 220KV overhead transmission network. TCD was contracted to undertake the major earthworks for access tracks, pads and substations to support this network between the Lamba Substation and Christmas Creek Mine.

Key Deliverables:
  • Vegetation clearing, grubbing, and stockpiling for 240 tracks and power pole pads over 120km
  • Construction of 2 new raised engineered embankment substation pads at Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek
  • Extensive borrow, cut and fill operations including grading, compaction, and final trim to design tolerances
  • Rail crossings, traffic management and operational integration measures

Works were delivered in close coordination with FMG stakeholders, minimising disruption to ongoing mine activities. Following successful completion, TCD was awarded a subsequent scope of comparable scale and complexity.

TCD was engaged to complete the bulk earthworks for the Cloudbreak Solar project, supporting the development of 197 MWdc of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and large-scale battery storage.

  • 125 hectares of final trimming works
  • Installation of 32 cable culverts
  • 25 kilometres of access tracks
  • 30,000 m³ of cut/fill
  • 13 kilometres of fencing

TCD actively coordinated with Fortescue to deliver the project on time, incorporating significant scope variations while managing interfaces with other contractors to ensure no delays onsite.

  • Clearing and development of borrow pits for 240,000 m³ bulk earthworks cut to fill forming 8 new industrial lots
  • 1.2km extension of Hematite Drive through to the Great Northern Highway — road formation, primerseal, asphalt, cycle path, line-marking, road furniture and tie-ins
  • New drainage infrastructure — open drains, box culverts, reinforced concrete pipes and over 6,000 m² of concrete revetment mattress
  • New potable water, communications and electrical service installations including substations and lighting poles

Works completed under strict environmental and heritage monitoring requirements, including dust suppressant use and cultural monitors.

TCD were awarded the Broome North Wastewater Treatment Plant 80ML Storage Dam No. 2 works in June 2023, with an aggressive construction timeline requiring the bulk of the works to be completed ahead of the 2023 northwest wet season.

  • 60,000 m³ of bulk and detailed cut to fill earthworks, imported compacted gravel crest and external embankment rock protection works
  • 35,000 m² of bituminous geomembrane (BGM) liner installation
  • 300 m³ of concrete spillways and BGM tie-ins
  • Supply, installation and commissioning of interconnecting pipework and valves between existing Storage Dam No. 1 and new Storage Dam No. 2
  • Supply and installation of 15 anchored egress nets
  • Installation of 3 specialist sonic drilled piezometer bore holes
  • Installation of concrete kerbing and perimeter security fencing

As part of Fortescue’s commitment to achieve real zero emissions by 2030 through renewable energy generation, TCD was contracted to construct a permanent base/camp supporting wind turbine operations, initially accommodating 350 people with future expansion capacity to 950.

Key Deliverables:
  • Vegetation clearing, grubbing and stockpiling for camp pad construction with 13,000 m³ cut to fill
  • Grading and repairing 2,000m of access tracks and pipeline corridors
  • Excavation, welding, pressure testing, installation and backfill of 750m of HDPE pipeline into a service trench
  • Clearing and grubbing of firebreak around camp pad
  • Construction of perimeter v-drains and windrows
  • Demolition of redundant concrete structures and tanks including controlled removal of hazardous waste
  • Clearing and topsoil grubbing for a new spray field

Delivered on time despite challenging scope changes, safely and to a high standard of quality.
